Rumors are Allen will go pro. Seems like an ill-advised move.

Wasn't he benched during the past season? I thought I heard that somewhere. If so, I would say very ill-advised if he has another year of eligibility. Perhaps he doesn't see himself getting the starting role again and is taking the only chance he thinks he can get.

Good luck to him, but he seems to make a lot of rash decisions. His leaving A&M before the bowl game, being another poor decision.

If he can't keep the starting job at UH, well...... He'd be lucky to get a shot as a free agent.

The article says he got his degree in December. Apparently he loaded up and was already making himself eligible to transfer for next year as a graduate.

I'm betting that didn't help him any with his teammates.

The QB talent that Sumlin recruited to A&M is just spectacular.

Perhaps it's more an indictment on the recruiting services than anything else. Yeah, sure... Sumlin "pulled the trigger" on these QBs and he must wear that mantle of decision-making, but we were just going along with what the rest of the nation thought of top HS talent.

Now, we can look to Kenny Hill as a recruiting gem but mismanaged at A&M. Gary Patterson was able to do a lot more with him, BUT that was only after some serious soul-searching after he left Aggieland. Kyle Allen going pro now?... unwise. Kyler Murray?... let's see how much he has grown since leaving his (selfish, conceited) days at A&M. He had/has more growing up to do than Kenny Hill did. Maybe Riley can straighten him out.

From MK's link:

Quote:
... But (Kyle) was plagued by turnovers, committing a combined six in games against Arizona and Texas Tech. His three against Tech on Sept. 23 led to his benching, and he lost the starting job for good the next week to Kyle Postma.

Allen saw only mop-up time in two of the final nine games. ...

The NFL draft & free agent guantlet is going to skewer this part of his record. Their probing will be so deep that they'll be looking from inside his tonsils to answer those blatantly red-flag questions. Rolling Eyes

A good synopsis although I'll add that IMO Kevin Sumlin was WAY too hands off during his tenure with these guys and created some of the off the field stuff by not keeping them more accountable (and that goes all the way back to JFF). Also I think Spav turned out to be a BIG problem for Sumlin instead of an asset IMO.

I thought with a couple of years of good coaching that Kyle was a winner.

I think he left too soon. If he had hung around for Mazzone (didn't like his play calling but he certainly seemed to be able to coach up quarterbacks), he probably could play in the bigs.

That leads into my biggest beef about the Sumlin years.

First Summie was too much of a CEO coach. He was too hands off. I mean when Spav was making all of those incomprehensibly incoherent play calls, I never understood why he didn't step in and say "STOP IT". Johnny Manziel did his last season...Johnny would audible out of crap calls and that is the reason we won a lot of games his second year.

Second, which bleeds out of one, because he was so hands off he didn't corral his assistants. I lay most of the problems with our quarterbacks with Spavital. How on earth do you start a quarterback who can't raise his arm off his side...obviously when Spav said Allen was ready to go, Sumlin should have said "What are you looking at, he's hurt"

Third he stuck with a terrible OL coach that wasted some enormous talent collected by Sherman. Think about it, when we were running stretch plays and zero hitches and zone reads, we had Ifedi, Harrison, the Nigerian kid (cannot spell or pronounce his name, he's with Cincinnati now). And the other two were pretty good...

Had Sumlin properly controlled the assistants and the play calls, we could have won several more games. We've had the horses but we pissed them away with lousy player management and lousy assistant coach management.

Laughing @ op (not Rover's comments)

Allen's opinion of himself is impressive and fatally flawed.

While I agree with most of your premise . I think it’s only fair to point out that Clarence was the play caller and OC during Johnny‘s second year if I recall correctly. And also during the Cotton Bowl win over OU. After the cotton bowl I think most of us were thinking the O was in good hands. I remember the loss to mizzou at the end of year two as being the point where I thought there was something seriously wrong.

I think this might be the year he attempts the pro route.

Look, he has very little video on him for this past year. What is the NFL gunna look at?

Measurables and how he might throw/accuracy against no DBs...

I am getting my years mixed up. Had he stayed, Kyle probably would have been our starter the following year and Trevor Knight may not have transferred here if we didn't lose both QB's. We didn't have anyone else except Hubenak. Kyle would have been a 3rd year starter this year if he lasted. I am not sure if that would have been better or not for us or him.

I am uncertain if the final outcome (wins/losses) would have changed much.

I am also declaring for the draft. Tomlin wants some competition for Le’Veon Bell....

Obviously almost zero chance that he gets drafted - but I bet he gets invited to a camp if for no other reason to provide a solid arm for OTAs.

Personally hope he does not actually declare for the draft and does not hire an agent BEFORE he rethinks this decision.

I would take that graduate transfer route to one of the schools that really needs a QB this coming year and take a chance on building his resume before he declares for the draft or signs a free agent contract to get that shot he wants...

I just think he needs some positive momentum before taking his shot

I'm not.

We went the whole year breaking in two freshmen QBs. With a starting Senior QB, who had three seasons of starting, I guarantee we win UCLA and probably Auburn too.

However, I doubt we changed HCs if we go 9-3. We are better off in the long run with Fisher.

So we are better off, but Sumlin and Allen are not.

Good point. And our offense might have looked different with an experienced QB running it.
