Cole dominates again in Game #3, besting the As and Danny Mengden, 4-1, to deliver the three-game road sweep. Mengden pitched well enough to win and had Houston completely muzzled through six. Cole was again rugged, however, yielding four hits and a run through six IPs and 101 pitches. Gerrit fanned nine today.

The Astros scored late with a pair in the T7 and again in the T8. Solo bombs by Stassi and Fisher and an RBI double by Yuli lit the scoreboard. Altuve with three hits, including a pair of doubles.

Houston moves to 24-15, though the Angels blasted the Rockies today, keeping pace in the AL West.

In Arlington, a sizzling-hot Nomar Mazara brought the Rangers back even with a B7 bomb against Detroit, and then won it with another walk-off bomb in the B10. For Ranger fans looking for any ray of hope, Mazara is only 23 years old. The chiseled, 6'4" and 215-lb RF has hit seven bombs in his last eight games, during which he has batted .379.

Beltre helped the Rangers earlier with two RBIs on a single and a sac fly.

Bartolo Colon pitched well today for five IPs, after which the Ranger bullpen avoided major trouble. Keone Kela finished with two scoreless innings and picked up the win.

Rangers 5, Tigers 4.

Elsewhere, the Bombers continue their protracted hot streak, and pass the Red Sox tonight in the AL East chase with another H2H victory, 9-6, over Boston at Yankee Stadium. The Yanks dropped a four-banger on Boston in the B8, courtesy of a Gardner triple and a two-run Aaron Judge homer off 100-mph Red Sox closer, Craig Kimbrel.

Three hits including a three-run jack by Naquin in the Indians 6-2 win over the Brewers this afternoon in Milwaukee. Ty is now hitting .329.

Mazara is still very young and he should develop nicely into the consistent power bat for the Rangers for years to come

I'm not sure Mazara will ever develop into a plus outfielder (although he does have a strong arm). His difficulty in accelerating from stop and the angles he often takes on drives into the gaps are not intuitive to one with strong outfielder skills.

His best position, IMO, would be first base. But the problem there is that the Rangers have three (3) bats that are probably best suited to play there:

Gallo
Guzman
Mazara

Another white hot spotlight on how JD doesn't truly weigh the long-term in how he builds a roster.

I'm not saying that there aren't times when things don't fully balance out (lefty-righty, or an organization having multiple strong players at one spot versus another).

But the wise GM recognizes that, knows which teams need that which he has ..... and orchestrates good deals/trades that help balance the roster.

A wise GM would also dedicate some priority to a pitching staff, as well. As dicey as the Rangers starters are, the bullpen is apparently even worse. Do we even know who our true closer is at Arlington Stadium? The set-up and hold roles are also a totally random proposition from day to day.

But hey, look at the bright side! At least Odor is out of the line-up. Rolling Eyes

BTW, both the Rangers and the Astros have today's Thursday evening off. So we do as well.

Rest up some pitchers. Houston has been using Devenski and Giles a whole lot lately.

They want it to be Kela -- but Diekmann is probably the more reliable closer.

Rangers take the first game of the series with the Astros 1-0

Both Hamels and Verlander pitched really well - only 6 hits allowed in the game. ( 5 hits by the Rangers and 1 by the Astros)

Springer was hurt after being hit by Hamels (he has a bruised elbow)

Astros again, by 6-1, in Game #3. Correa and Gattis crushed long bombs, while Keuchel slings seven shutout IPs to improve his slate to 3-5 .... after threatening to sue his own offense for non-support in a few earlier starts.

The bats once again go COMPLETELY silent, though, in the first game, and the team squanders another excellent start, again by JV.

Both bullpens have been an adventure thus far, several times culminating in a sad ending. The outstanding Astro starters are 21-9 on the season, while their pen is 5-7. And at least a few of those seven pen losses erased winning starts. Another factoid, Houston's 3, 4 and 5 starters are 14-2 thus far in 24 starts. That kind of quality in the back-of-the-rotation starting pitching should enable the team to compete very well during the long haul of a 162-game season.

Both teams looked ridiculous in those pink caps today. Yeah, we're ALL aware of breast cancer awareness by now .... so please don't make us wear those pink hats!

Beltre's hamstring issues appear to be both chronic and recurring.

Enjoy him when you get to see him ... because the end appears to be coming very soon.

The skills aren't eroded -- either in the field or at the plate. But if you can't stay on the field because of injury ... you can't be effective (regardless of how well you perform in those limited windows when you can get on the field).

And the further bad thing about this is that the uncertainty of his being able to stay on the field makes it difficult if not impossible to move him to a contender looking for that "last missing piece" as this season wears on.

Which is critical if AB wants another playoff run -- because that's simply not happening for the Rangers in the near term.

Tell ya what ....

The Astros will give up Marisnick and JD Davis, our back-up and Triple A 3B for Beltré right now! We've also got a couple of guys at Fresno who're hitting well above .300 and could also be considered. Laughing

The Astros took on Beltran last season when he was 40 and a shadow of his younger self. But after a part-time, .230 season, Carlos got that huge hit off the monster up in Boston to produce the winning run and close out that ALDS. I was only hoping that the aging Beltran would get just one more huge hit for Houston before his days were done. And he did it!

Beltré is just a great hitter, and I always enjoy watching him hit. Bad ham and all, he would be a huge help to the Astros right now.

It helps as one of the "big" hitters (Altuve) is 0 for his last 13 ABs

It looks the same for Tigers Cabrera, even though he is only 35, this year he has spent lots of time on the DL and with aches and pains

Holy freaking heck! I can't take it anymore. Gattis goes down swinging again. The Astros DH is the worst hitter on the team, now hitting sub .200. I don't see how that can that be allowed to continue any longer. Time bring up JD or Tucker? Grrrrr....

Gattis goes deep against the angels and is on an 8/25 binge. I just had to chew a little of his hide to get him going. LOL

A couple of years ago I thought Verlander was done. A power pitcher whose power was ebbing and who was seemingly unable to make the necessary adjustments.

Boy ... was I wrong.

The Astro's TEAM ERA is now 2.43

I've been thinking for weeks, there's no way that they can maintain that. Guess I was sorta right.....it's been going down! Shocked

The Rangers lose a series to the worst team in baseball.

Leading the majors in strikeouts ... and in poorest offensive performance.

And you don't even want to begin to talk about the (lack of) pitching.

This team could lose 100 games very easily.
