The defending world champion Astros do not disappoint their SRO home-opener crowd with an impressive, 6-1 victory over the Orioles. Starter Charlie Morton hurled six IPs of three-hit shutout ball, after which Peacock, Harris and McHugh each completed a late inning.

On offense, Marwin went solo yard while a Derek Fisher triple along with doubles from Altuve and Springer delivered all the offense Houston would need.

The Astros have now seen five quality starts from their starters to initiate the campaign. Justin Verlander begins the top of the rotation anew tomorrow evening. The Astros expected the return of 1B Yuli Gurriel for Tuesday's game, but instead placed him on the 10-day disabled list as a precaution to allow his surgically repaired hand a little more time to heal. Yuli made 130 starts last season at 1B and hit .299 with 75 RBIs.

Colon pitched like a savvy veteran but got no support from Ranger bats. Oakland scored two late runs to break the 1-1 deadlock, courtesy of some sketchy Ranger relief pitching. I actually watched this late game on Fox SSW, and the Rangers are going to be very difficult to follow with any enthusiasm whatsoever this season unless things change in a big way.

Odor building off a solid 2017 campaign (a whisker above the Mendoza line) with a terrible start. He is damn near useless. My brother has coached a number of the years in the Texas League and has always been critical of Odor’s game and attitude. Contrast with perpetually glowing reports of the Astros at Corpus over the years.

I’ve been a Rangers fan since 1972. It’s getting to the point of no return for me.

Yeah, Odor is definitely a howling dawg. Aptly named, though. Wink

Meanwhile, the Astros have TWO young 2Bs, Ryno Birk and Jack Mayfield who're both doing very well as they plow their way through the Astro farm system. They were both great college players, as well.

But as we know, neither will EVER play 2B at the Juice Box. Thus, could a deal be made with Texas to give one of these two good kids a legit chance to play 2B in MLB. I'd bet that Houston would trade either of them plus perhaps another prospect for a decent southpaw out of the pen.

After a slow first five games, RF and five-hole Josh Reddick exploded tonight with two HRs including a slammer. After seven, it's 10-5, Houston, as the Orioles chipped Verlander a bit and were hanging tough in the early going.

Houston rolls over Baltimore, 10-6, as Reddick's two blasts account for six RBIs. Earlier Reddick reached above the RF wall to rob the Orioles of a three-run jack. The sore-toed Carlos Correa also bashes an early inside-the-parker, knocks in three and scores three on the night. Ten hits for Houston on the evening.

Verlander goes 5.2 IPs and gets touched for three earned runs, all coming on two Oriole HRs. Devenski, Rondon, Will Harris and Joe Smith finished 3.1 IPs for Houston, getting scuffed for six hits and two runs, one unearned. Rondon earns the victory.

Houston launches from the starting gate with five wins in their first six games.

Hamels pitches like an ace is supposed to pitch -- 11 strikeouts over five innings and the Rangers snap their three game losing streak by beating Oakland.

More incredibly, the win snapped a nine-game losing streak to the A's in Oakland!

Cole Hamels is indeed money when he's on and locating at the bottom of the zone. He got maybe four of five up into the middle of the zone against Houston and got them amped. But last night, he was much sharper.

FWIW, Ranger bats also got the best of As ace, Graveman. They'll go again late tonight -- Doug Fister vs. Sean Manaea.

The Astros and Orioles play a get-away day game at 1:00 today -- Dallas Keuchel vs. Dylan Bundy.

Coupla things you may not have noticed early on ....

Clayton Kershaw is 0-2 after two starts. Mike Wacha and Danny Mengden also lost their opening starts, so Aggie MLB starters did not get out of the gate well this season.

As well, the Dodgers are off to a bad start in the NL. The Giants beat them, 1-0, in each of the first two days, and things haven't gotten much rosier since. The Bombers and the BoSox are looking absolutely juggernaut in our league, however.

Carlos Correa is a scratch from the Astro line-up today, presumably to stay off the sore toe. Marwin to SS and Jake M to the OF.

Correa is currently hitting .474, while Altuve showcases a .440.

Though a hot Josh Reddick banged out three more hits, a tepid, seven-hit Astros offense survived a shaky finale to sweep the Orioles, 3-2, as a result of an adequate and tenacious Dallas Keuchel start, followed by four IPs of airtight relief work from Rondon and Peacock.

The Astros drew blood in the B2 on a Marisnick RBI bouncer that scored Reddick. Later and after Marwin's flared squeeze bunt scored Altuve to tie it, a big B7 two-out RBI single from Alex Bregman finally gave the Houston offense some daylight.

Keuchel held the Os to one earned run in five IPs, but had location difficulty, walking four and also uncorking a WP. A couple of Marwin throwing errors didn't help, leading to an unearned Oriole run. All told, Dallas expended 104 pitches to get through just five innings and exit the game behind, 2-1.

After knotting it at 2s in the B6, the Astros tallied the narrow difference-maker in the B7, while Rondon and Peacock, with three spotless IPs, made the late pitches to shut the Orioles down at the finish line.

With a travel day tomorrow, Houston stretches an impressive start to 6-1.

I haven't seen any numbers yet for the full seven games, but I suspect that Houston is lagging behind last year's hitting with RISP. Astro bats have left a lot of "crooked number" innings on the bases. Today, they were 1 for 8 with RISP.

Another aspect where the numbers are available and utterly stark .... strikeouts. Last year, the Astros achieved the surreal combo of the offense with the most power and the MLB lead in hits, EB hits, RBIs, and runs scored, but while striking out the fewest times of any MLB order. Thus far this year is VERY different -- as the Astros lead MLB in whiffs .... first to worst. Hopefully, this will change as the season unfolds.

The good news, I suppose, they're finding different ways to win when things aren't clicking. Today's win saw a squeeze bunt for an RBI, a 7th-inning Derrick Fisher pilfer of 2B, followed by the crucial two-out RBI single by Bregman.

Today's POG was Brad Peacock IMO. The dude blew right through the Orioles in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings when a one-run game was on the line.

There is also something eerie about Carlos Correa, especially went he's NOT in the line-up. Correa is far from the only big bat in the Houston order, but the team just appears to lose some of their mojo when he's not on the line-up card and hitting clean-up. The bats were flaccid today without him, and last year when he missed six weeks and 37 games with the thumb surgery, the Astros were 18-19 when he was DL'd. Having observed such, it's also true that last year's Astros line-up experienced more injury setbacks than just Correa during that interim, but when Carlos returned the Astros came alive again and rode some impressive September momentum to the World Series title.

IMO, if the Astros truly want to chase one of the best regular-season records in modern times this season -- the 1998 Bombers with 114 and 2001 Seattle with 116 wins -- they'd do well to have Correa out there at SS for about 156 games or so. Obviously, the same goes for Little Joe .... but to put up those kind of win numbers, the team would have to remain virtually injury-free for the season -- and the Astros were a long, long way from that last year.

If we look ahead a bit and see where the next big test might be for Houston's chances at a "generational" regular season record, that will arrive in the month of May. During those 31 calendar days, the Astros will play 17 games against 2017 playoff teams. Moreover, 13 of those will be played on the road.

Correa returns to the Astro line-up tonight against San Diego. Astros at full strength, except for Yuli, backing Lance McCullers.

Diego is pitching some guy I don't know -- but he has tortured numbers.

Rangers take on the Blue Jays in Arlington. Lefty Matt Moore for Texas, and righty Marco Estrada for the Jays.
