Astros have put together a 4-2 homestand thus far, with three still left against the Jays. In the two losses, we saw two complete and total no-shows at the plate for the Houston offense in their own yard.

A few pitchers are figuring out that they don't have to throw Astro hitters strikes. There are nights when our line-up goes up there hacking at anything and everything. Lotsa guys got themselves out by swinging at bad pitches.

However, the team continues to come around and solidify as the sked eases up for most of the rest of the summer. Again, I expect Houston will have buried Seattle by the All-Star break.

Tonight at the Box, it's ace vs. ace as Verlander (9-2, 1.60) throws against the Jays' JA Happ (9-3, 3.56).

Cole Hamels (4-6, 3.41) takes the hill tonight in Arlington against San Diego.

Bad news up in St. Louis. Mike Wacha was DL'd and will miss several starts due to a strained oblique muscle in his pitching arm.

An Altuve 2B, a Correa walk and a two-out single by Yuli gets a run back in the B1.

2-1, now, headed to the 3rd.

Rangers and Padres still scoreless in the 3rd.

JV escapes a 2nd and 3rd, no outs jam in the T3 with a pop and a K.

Bregman launches a LF bomb in the B3 to knot the score at 2s.

Marwin leaves the bases loaded in the B3 with fly-out to RF.

Still 2-2, to the 4th.

JA Happ has expended 69 pitches to get through just three IPs. Verlander has thrown 57.

This will be a bullpen game in the late going, as these starters won't last much past the 5th or maybe the 6th.

Bregman again with a two-out single to score Marisnick from 2B. Alex moves to 2B on the play at the plate.

Astros take a 3-2 lead headed to the 5th.

Granderson quickly leads off the T5 with a HR to RF to tie the score at 3s. Brick wall

JV escapes further damage in the 5th. He's finished five IPs on 80 pitches.

Jays 6, Astros 3.

JV was not sharp and Houston folded badly in the back half of the game after taking a 3-2 lead earlier.

Stros take the series with a walk off 2-run bomb by Bregman. Bregman can't seem to buy a single right now...7 hits in the last two, but just dingers (2) and doubles (5).

it was a great comeback - concerning is Keuchel's performance:

5.1 IP 6 ER

after not allowing an earned run in his past two starts

McCullers throws a gem of a start -- 7 IPs, 3 hits, 7 Ks, and zero runs. Devo escapes a huge, 2B and 3B with no outs jam in the B8.

To the 9th, Astros 1, Rays 0, as Marisnick hits another bomb in the T5 for the only run of the game.

Astros leave two on in the 9th when George grounds out. The slumping Springer goes 0 for 5 again tonight. Houston finishes with eight hits.

Still 1-0.

The Houston pen needs three more outs. Rondon on to close.

After fanning the first two, Rondon yields a bouncer to SS that Marwin throws away, sending CJ Cron to 2B.

Rondon fans M Smith to end it.

Astros win a 1-0 pitchers duel to open the road trip.

18th win in their last 21 games for Houston to maintain a 3.5 game lead on Seattle. McCullers is the winner to notch his record up to 9-3. Devo picks up his 15th Hold, while Rondon earns his 5th Save. Marisnick and T White with multi-hit games.

Meanwhile, down on the farm ....

No. 9 overall MLB prospect Kyle Tucker (Astros' No. 1) hit a solo home run in his first at-bat for AAA Fresno, extending his hitting streak to 17 games. He went on to finish 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBIs and a stolen base. The 21-year-old outfielder is raking at a .472 clip with 10 multi-hit games during his streak. Overall, Tucker is hitting .318 with 13 homers, 62 RBIs and 14 steals through 73 games. Earlier in the day, Tucker was named to the PCL All-Star team.

At AA Corpus and speaking of hitting streaks, Randy Cesar rapped an early-inning double into the LCF gap last night to extend his Texas League-record hitting streak to 43 straight games. Cesar is now hitting at .360, with 93 hits in 64 games.

A third intriguing development, Hooks 1B, the 6'7" Taylor Jones, has been promoted to AAA Fresno when Grizzlies 1B and former UK Howser Award winner, AJ Reed, was recalled to the big club. At the time of Reed's summons to Houston when Correa was DL'd, AJ led the PCL in RBIs with 67 in 73 games, and was 2nd in HRs with 18. BTW, Kyle Tucker is 2nd in the PCL in RBIs with 62, 2nd in the league in hits with 95, 3rd in the PCL in doubles with 24, and 1st in runs scored with 61, all in 73 games.

But back to Taylor Jones .... In his first game at Fresno, Jones went 3 for 5 with a HR and three RBIs.

Houston bats go to sleep again as the Rays win, 3-2, surrendering just three Astro hits, while the Houston defense drops Cole in the grease with some faulty fielding that produced two unearned runs in the B4. Cole deserved much better, yielding five hits and one earned run in six IPs. Alex Bregman banged another two-run homer, but the rest of a patchwork Houston line-up, sans Correa, Springer, McCann and Yuli, didn't bother to show up.

Ed - If the 'stros do pull away from the Mariners - it'll likely be after August 1. The Mariner schedule shifted from brutal to reasonable for the last 5 games in June and all but the last two in July - against the Astros. I suspect the Astros have the better players, but the Mariners are a very good team. It's been a fun first half - and a lot of season left to enjoy - until the real games begin August 30th.

I agree on the Mariners. They just aren't going away, winning eight of their last ten.

Houston must get into a groove of sound and solid baseball, or the Mariners will be crawling through the back door.

After a stinker offensive showing in the 1-3 Tampa series, the Astros struggle by the Rangers twice in Arlington, 5-4 and 5-3. They were both close, but Houston now owns eight straight over Texas.

Back home against the White Sox, Houston takes the first two, and finally has a strong offensive game with 11 runs in Game #2. The line-up is still sketchy with Correa and McCann down, and with George and Marwin mired in slumps.

Little Joe, Yuli, Gattis and Bregman are carrying the club offensively, while Reddick has finally heated up against RHP. Tony Kemp is also carrying his own water, as well.

But the strength of the Houston club right now is still all that dominant starting pitching, four of whom are among the Top Ten in the league in most pitching categories. Devo is still stout from the pen and the Rondon acquisition this winter has worked out well thus far. But perhaps the biggest surprise and comeback arm of the season has been Collin McHugh working from the pen.

Interesting and exciting to see that Houston has promoted LHP Cionel Perez all the way from AA Corpus to the big club. Perez was 6-1 with 2.10 ERA with the Hooks this season.
