Giles gacks up another bomb, but a solo.

10-6, as Houston still threatens in the B8.

Kyle Tucker has been promoted from Fresno and is in the starting line-up today, hitting in the #7 hole. He's 1 for 4 and a bases-loaded walk for his first MLB RBI.

11-6, now, as Stassi hits with the sacks loaded.

Max singles in another run.

12-6.

Bases still loaded, one down and Marwin to the plate now. He has two hits already today.

Marwin GIDP.

12-6, to the 9th.

Side-armer Joe Smith on to close for Houston.

BTW, Seattle got ambushed at home again today by the Rockies, 5-1. Mariner ace James Paxton took a beating.

Joe snuffs the Sox in the T9.

Final .... 12-6.

Houston wins their fifth straight -- while the Sox remain actively awful.

Morton (11-2) skids out of the T6 with his pants on fire, but still notches the win anyway when the Astros enlarged his one-run margin when he exited.

Solid work by the pen today -- 3.1 IPs, two hits, one run, no walks and six Ks.

Strip wins again as the Dodgers beat the Angels, 3-1. Ross, 7-2 now, hurls six IPs, three hits and one run. His ERA now stands at 2.22, as the Dodgers move to 1/2 game of the Snakes in the NL West.

The Astros sweep the ChiSox, 2-1, despite a three-hit offense, on the strength of perhaps Keuchel's best start of the season. Dallas went seven full, scattering six hits, one run (earned) on an economical (for him) 104 pitches. AJ showed us the hard edge of his bullpen today in a tight one, as McHugh and Rondon finished up without difficulty.

Not much to talk about at all on offense, though Altuve solo homered and Yuli doubled and later scored on a B7 Marvin sacrifice to break a 1-1 deadlock. Kemp also had an interesting day -- 1 for 2 with a walk and two SBs, all for naught.

Houston now welcomes a hot Oakland team to the Box for a four-gamer. The A's are on fire right now, winning 16 of their last 19.

The Rangers got an excellent start from Bibens-Dirkx and air-tight pen work from a three-man committee to blank Detroit, 3-0. Profar slammed a solo while Guzman picked up three hits. Kela continues to impress, earning his 22nd Save.

Around the league, one thing has become numbingly repetitive .... Boston, Houston and New York all won again today. The Rockies just went ahead of Seattle, 4-3, in the 6th, so let's see if their pen can hang in there for the road sweep in Seattle.

And the Rockies pitching collapses quickly thereafter. d'oh!

Seattle wins, 6-4, as Houston maintains its 3.5 game lead over the Mariners. Both the Red Sox and the Astros are on current six-game winning streaks.

The deadline trade rumors are all over the various hardball websites ....

Will the Bombers pay the Rangers' price for Cole Hamels? Could be, but New York is also looking at other options, as well.

Will Houston engage in a bidding war with the Yanks for the Orioles' Zach Britton? Could be, but New York also appears to be even more focused on starting pitching upgrades. While Houston observably needs more bullpen help from the portside, both teams are also looking hard at San Diego bullpen righty, Brad Hand.

Looks like the Dodgers and the Snakes will battle each other in the upcoming Manny Machado auction. Maybe the Brewers, as well, who're looking very good for the playoffs, but need middle infield help. The fallback for the Crew could be Whit Merrifield from the Royals.

The rub is that just about every one of these guys will be FAs this winter, so we're talking about rent-a-player deals here, and that's all. The Orioles asking price for both Machado and Britton has been reported to be very steep. Perhaps that's why Luhnow and AJ brought up their prized young southpaw, Cionel Perez, to see if he's ready and can help the Astros down the stretch. If so, they won't pay the Orioles asking price for a rent-a-lefty pitcher.

The AL All-Star team could have rostered Kluber, Severino, Snell and the four Astro righty starters and they would have been just fine! Very Happy

Springer apparently wins All-Star recognition based on his performance in the World Series last fall. Pretty tough for a .248 hitter to make an all-star team unless something else is in the mix.

Insofar as Altuve is concerned, how could anybody, anywhere vote in anyone else at 2B?

Alex probably has more big, game-winning hits this season than any other .285 hitter in the game.

Hinch has managed the bullpen pretty well, IMO. Of course it helps when your starters are money.

Yes, we could use a lefty in the pen. But I can't see sending out anyone in the system to acquire that arm. Everyone else has a spot of concern as Ed mentioned. I still like us vs Boston or NY if the playoffs started today.

AJ has managed his pen beautifully, IMO, for the second consecutive season. It ain't AJ's fault when Giles slings a flat slider into somebody's wheelhouse; but they continue to work with Ken on all of it. He and Strom have coaxed effectiveness from Sipp this season, after two bad seasons from Tony, when we had nobody else for that LH relief pitching role. The Rondon deal also has been a winner, and the transition of McHugh into a late-inning stopper has been a stratagem.

This season AJ has also given his bullpen guys the work and then the rest they need to stay effective. He's using his pen depth splendidly, as everybody gets to throw regularly. Last season when all the injuries set in, the pen was stressed so onerously. I thought Devo and Giles were on fumes by the post-season.

All this team needs right now is a healthy return of McCann -- along with his batting eye, and the tardy and still needed ignition at the plate by Marwin. Correa's return would also help, obviously.

I'm getting REAL tired of seeing the Astro bats go silent at home! REAL TIRED!

So Cole gets dropped in the grease by our patchwork offense last night, throwing six shutout frames with nothing to show for it as Houston acquiesces to a 2-0 shutout loss to a bottom of the rotation Oakland starter. Astro hitters from #5 thru #9 in our order did not even get a single hit. And the day before, Astro hitters smashed out a grand total of three hits against a ChiSox starter who entered the game with a 6.89 ERA!

And then the pen -- Peacock and Harris -- got chipped for single runs late in the game. And that was it.

This Houston line-up is a patchwork mess right now. The team needs Correa back ASAP, and George and Marwin need to get off their a$$es and start hitting again! .... and that goes for the perpetually injured McCann, as well.

George responds, with two hits and two RBIs. Bregman jacks his 18th, a solo.

Kyle Tucker with a double, a HPB, a SB and two runs scored.

3-0, Houston, in the 5th, with JV on the hill.

The Red Sox continue to torment the Rangers. At Fenway, it's 8-4, BoSox, moving to the 9th.

George had 2 last night as well, hope it's a sign.

I hope the spike to Marwin's hand is not that bad. Didn't see any blood.

Altuve appears to be trying to pull everything. Also, back foot coming up too quick for me. But he's still hitting .337, so what do I know?

For the second night in a row, the Astro starter finishes six shutout IPs, yielding just three hits. Verlander finishes the 6th on 110 pitches.

The obvious difference is that we have three more runs tonight than last night. Thus, we need nine outs and some clean work from the pen.

The Astros got the lead-off hitter on in the 5th and 6th, but did nothing with them. But with this "50% Fresno line-up", things don't look like the Houston batting order right now.

Devo to the hill for the 7th.

Bregman solos again to the Crawford Boxes to lead off the B7.

4-0, to the 8th.

Joe Smith to the hill for the T8. Lately and after he came off the 10-day DL, Joe has been throwing better.

Smith successfully navigates the 8th -- one hit and one K.

Here's a good snapshot of Houston's offensive difficulty right now ....

In the B8, we send up Tyler White, Max Stassi and Kyle Tucker against a bottom-of-the-bullpen Oakland righty with a 4.60 ERA.

All three struck out.

And then another base hit and a run.

AJ hooks him.

Rondon to the hill to try to finish the job. Another poor performance by Giles.

Another single given up by Rondon.

4-2 now, with the tying run on base, and still nobody out.
