Both the Astros and Rangers stunk it up tonight, though the Rangers at least went down fighting after falling behind, 8-0, to lose to the Jays, 8-5.

The Astros, however, neglected to show up at all, losing 4-1 to a collection of Diego journeymen arms with miserable MLB career records. Houston got four measly singles tonight, and again whiffed at the plate an alarming 12 times. The Astros collected exactly one hit after the 3rd inning and went 0 for 3 with RISP, while Astro bats left 14 runners on the bases tonight.

McCullers was game on the hill, but he had difficulty locating his knuckle-curve, gave up a self-inflicted run in the 1st, and then yielded three crucial two-strike hits in the 5th to bury himself.

The Astros get a two-out, 10th inning single from Alex Bregman -- when San Diego failed to catch an IF pop-up near the plate -- to score Derrick Fisher from 2B to edge San Diego, 1-0, in the Juice Box on Saturday evening. More offensive malaise for Houston tonight, with no EB hits for the second consecutive game. The Houston offense is 0 for 9 with RISP against an array of suspect San Diego pitchers. About half of the Houston order is simply not hitting anywhere near their standards of last year, at least not yet.

Gerrick Cole started and went seven brilliant IPs, striking out 11. The Houston bullpen of Harris, Giles and Devenski held the shutout until Houston's offense finally woke up.

After a shaky Game #1, the Astros take the series from San Diego with a 4-1 Sunday win. Charlie Morton was nails again, going six IPs and again yielding nary an earned run on four hits. The Houston bully of Harris, Joe Smith and Peacock finished three clean innings -- and that was that.

Houston's power grid finally emerged again, with all four runs arriving courtesy of a B5 three-run jack from reserve catcher Max Stassi and a B6 solo from Josh Reddick. Though a big improvement over the last three games, the Astros line-up still managed but six hits while the top of the order was inert.

Houston breaks from the starting gate at an impressive 8-2. But it's been parsimonious pitching that has led the Astros, while last year's dominant offense has shown itself only erratically.

The Jays are taking it to the Rangers again, leading 7-1 in the B6. Cole Hamels was not sharp at all, yielding two bombs for four runs in the first. Ranger bats have but three hits thus far.

make it 18 batters in a row - his offense has already given him a lead 5-0 bottom of the 6th

OHtani has been the goods so far. Seems to have single handedly made the Angels an early season front runner.

The Astros squelch the Twins tonight in the Twin Cities, 2-0, behind more brilliant Verlander starting pitching, and some more sketchy hitting. JV went seven shutout IPs yielding four hits, after which Peacock, Devenski and Giles collaborated for the last six outs. Ken Giles recorded his first save of the season by nailing down the final out.

The Astros finally broke the ice with a single run in the T6 on a JD Davis single that scored Correa, who had doubled. Two innings later Marwin's double again scored Correa for an insurance run. The Astros got seven hits on the night -- and continued an early trend by striking out 13 times. The team also hit 1 for 10 with RISP.

Tonight's win moves Houston to 9-2 in the early going.

The Rangers get killed by the Angels, 8-3, in Arlington. Fister left after five IPs down 3-1, after an adequate start. But the Ranger pen was soon tortured again, as the Angels finished with 13 hits.

Apart from Beltre and Elvis, this 4-8 Texas team wears the look of an expansion team. That expert opinion comes from an original and very young Colt .45s fan, since I saw plenty of expansion baseball for about 15 years!

Beltre's single in the fourth was his 3,060th career hit, tying Biggio for 23rd on the all-time list.

FWIW, Bregman got off to a slow start last year too. But the Astro bats have been frustrating, to say the least, in that so many in the line-up are not producing.

Look at last night's Houston line-up card. From the seven-hole down and then back up through the two-hole, here are the Houston starters and their BAs in Minnesota last night .... JD Davis .111, Marisnick .179, Fisher .167, Springer .182, Bregman .175. I'm confident you see the problem.

In essence, Houston is trying to launch an offense with only the #3, 4, 5 and 6 hitters -- and did I mention, Marwin is in the middle of that quartet, and he's also hitting .200. This offense has been basically abysmal!

However, there is obvious and important good news as well. The Houston pitching staff leads MLB with a 1.82 ERA out of the gate. They are also 2nd in MLB in strikeouts and 3rd in WHIP.

One can only wonder, with the team still at 9-2 despite its current offensive travails, what they might become if and when they ever start hitting? .... even at about 90-95% of where they hit last season!

Last season, Houston led MLB with a .282 team BA. They also led in runs scored, hits, EB hits, RBIs, OBA and Slugging Pct. This year, they're hitting .247 through the first 11 games. Somehow, they're still 8th in Team BA, while they're 14th in both hits and HRs. They're also 29th of 30 MLB clubs in strikeouts. These bats have simply gotta get going!

The Houston offense no-shows again in a 4-1 loss to the Twins. Seven hits and none for EBs from the Astro bats. Houston also received five walks, but GIDP'd twice and went 1 for 6 with RISP.

Dallas Keuchel was a mess again, needing 101 pitches to get through just four IPs. Keuchel yielded three runs on five hits and four walks, plus his own fielding error.

The Rangers followed suit by getting killed again by the Angels, 11-1.

The Rangers could look like the "pre" version 3-4 years ago of what the Astros were before they came the darlings of MLB.

My problem is I don't trust JD to reshape the Rangers as quickly or as effectively as his counterparts in Houston have done.
